Episode 102 – 2011 Fall Movie Preview

Spencer and Jen preview the movies slated to be released during the fall of 2011, before closing out with their DVD picks of the week.

For his DVD pick, Spencer chose the third season of the underrated drama series, Sons of Anarchy (DVD/Blu-ray). Jen selected the blu-ray release of the Coen Brothers Collection (Blood Simple/Fargo/Miller’s Crossing/Raising Arizona).

Breaking Bad is the best show on television right now. I think that Breaking Bad season three
is the best television season ever done.
I don’t think any show has ever had that level of acting and such a
great story arc in one season.
Bryan Cranston is well deserving of those three emmys and I love to see his ventures into the film world (I’m especially excited for him in the Total
Recall remake). I would also like
to see Aaron Paul work more into the film world. His work in Breaking Bad keeps getting better. Paul would have worked great for the currently on hold Gunslinger Project by Ron Howard as the Eddie Dean character (a heroine addict ironically).

I agree with Mike C that Breaking Bad is the best show on television. The show may have received some flack this past season for being too “slow” but I think that the slower pace is a logical step for the narrative of the show.

I agree that it is the best show on TV, but I still think it is a hard show to watch. It is so dark thematically at times…so brutal, that sometimes I have to be in the mood for it. Bryan Cranston is an incredible actor. I’m disappointed to hear they are breaking the final season into two parts.

It may have started a little slow, but it has hit its stride. Walter White’s “I’m the one who knocks” speech two episodes ago is one Walter White’s best moments on the show.

I have no problems with the pace of the show. I think the writing is phenomenal. They do their job too well. That is the challenge of the show, making the main characters do terrible things but still be likeable to the audience. And they handle that balance wonderfully.

it should have ended after the first or second season. It’d have been way more powerful and amazing if he died and then it ended. I mean Walter has lung cancer, but as he became more successful he’s able to live longer. I feel like the show is going on longer than the creators expected. It’s ok to end a show after the first or second season. It happens all the time across the pond and that’s why their dramas get more praise and accolades than ours.

And this is in no way saying that the show is bad or horrible… Just that it chose the wrong path once it became so popular.

I’m sure they didn’t realize quite how popular it would become, but I think it is fairly surprising that they have set an end date. Most series continue on until the network decides the ratings are too low and cancel them. AMC seems to be bucking that trend.

I agree that down playing his illness is shame, I think having that issue always looming out there adds another layer of death, but it doesn’t bother me that much. I’m so invested now anyway.

I believe the ambivalent morality of all of the character’s actions is what separates Breaking Bad from most television series, even something like the Sopranos. I think the pacing of the series is also excellent, and it is disheartening to see Internet comments about how allegedly slow the series is going this season

Stephan you are absolutely correct. The ambivalent morality does separate it, and you have to give credit to the writers and actors for walking that fine line for making their characters completely detestable. This is a concept that could easily alienate a lot of people, but it is done so well that people love it.
