Spencer and John discuss Pixar’s move into sequels with Cars 2, look back at Cameron Diaz’s profitable career in advance of Bad Teacher, and give their DVD picks of the week.

For his DVD pick, John went nostalgic and selected Rocko’s Modern Life: Season 1. Spencer went the indie route and chose Miguel Arteta’s latest, Cedar Rapids (DVD/Blu-ray).

Where did you guys get this statistic that Cameron Diaz is the highest grossing actress of all time? I’m genuinely curious, because I would have assumed it was Carrie Fisher (and cursory searching seems to indicate Google agrees). If you’re talking just this decade, then it’s got to be Emma Watson. I guess with Charlie’s Angels and Shrek combined…I don’t know, it just still doesn’t seem right with Star Wars and Harry Potter in the mix. I’d like to see it broken down.

P.S. John: Very Bad Things is better than Friday Night Lights?!?! Are you fucking kidding me?! One my most hated films of all time over one of my most loved. Oy. oy oy oy.

That is a good question actually, I don’t remember where I saw that
statistic, but it was surprising enough that it stuck with me. I’ll have to
do some searching. You do make a good point about Emma Watson…

It is confusing to do a quick search because I have seen lists with Natalie
Portman at #1, Nicole Kidman at #1, etc.

While Cars the movie may have been one of the lower grossing, and lowest quality films out of Pixar, the Franchise (merchandising, licensing etc.) is HUGE. Cars has product placement all over the place even down to the classic racecar bed” featuring Lightning McQueen.

I finally just saw Cedar Rapids and liked it a lot! It has a lot of heart and manages to not be condescending regarding it’s characters.
