Spencer and Rich discuss Daniel Craig in advance of Cowboys & Aliens, share terrible movie ideas in honor of The Smurfs and give their DVD picks of the week.

For his DVD pick, Spencer chose the surprise sci-fi hit, Source Code (DVD/Blu-ray). Rich stepped into the world of cannibalism with his pick of We Are What We Are.

Three things.

1. I like The Jacket quite a bit, and I think I maybe even have mentioned it at some point on the site as an underrated movie. Just throwing it some support!

2. Asterix is an ancient Gaul!! Do not call him a Roman or a Greek or whatever in front of a French person.

3. The phrase “angryish turtle” re: Bowser threw me into a fit of giggles.

Just to refute the notion that the supporting cast of Munich are “a bunch of nobodys”: Ciaran Hinds has
been in many movies including There Will Be Blood and Road to Perdition with
Daniel Craig, and he played Julius Caesar in Rome. Matthew Kassovitz was in Amelie and
wrote & directed La Haine. Mathieu Amalric was excellent in the Mesrine
films and is in Quantum of Solace with Daniel Craig. I guess what I’m saying is
that just because you don’t immediately recognize their names doesn’t mean you
should dismiss them as nobodys.

Clue is not a “choose your own adventure” film. When it came
out in theaters it had three different endings and you only saw the one on the
print at your local theater, then all three appeared on the home video releases.
A goofy premise for sure, but it helped it stay true to the source material. The film isn’t super hilarious but the cast elevates the material, especially
Eileen Brennan, Michael McKean, and Madeline Kahn. I’d also argue that if you
are going to make a movie out of a board game, Clue probably has more plot to
work with than a lot of them (including Battleship).

I also liked Source Code. I think a lot of people saw Jake
and explosions and gave it a pass, but it’s a lot more than just action.

When I said nobodys I wasn’t saying they haven’t done worthwhile stuff – I’m saying they aren’t megastars like Eric Bana and Daniel Craig.

I don’t think much of Clue honestly, I didn’t find it particularly entertaining. And I think board game based movies aren’t a particularly good idea – whether it is Clue or Battleship. But yes, Battleship looks terrible.
There were at least a handful of people who walked out of the screening of Source Code I was at. I think the military storyline turned some people off…particularly the end.
